Artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword. This aspect is because individuals have differing opinions and perspectives regarding its advantageous or disadvantageous nature. The possible effects of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have been the subject of heated discussion for some time. Numerous news articles and interviews integrate discussions on AI in various instances and discuss some of its benefits and drawbacks. One camp of thought holds that AI poses an existential risk to humankind because of its ability to destroy the workforce and perhaps become a nuclear weapon. On the other hand, many see AI as a game-changer because of its potential to automate routine chores, boost productivity, and reveal previously unknown truths about the universe. Which side, therefore, should humans lean on? Does AI cripple or enhance human activity and productivity?
AI technology is utilized for good and evil. Unfortunately, this technological advancement has just as many disadvantages as advantages. According to a BBC interview with Steve Hawking, the latter mentions that if human beings are not careful in their use and advancements in AI, this technology could surpass human knowledge and spell out the entire race (BBC news, 2014). Additionally, AI is employed for malicious purposes. It is utilized for evil, such as Spying on individuals. For instance, face recognition technology driven by AI may be used to monitor the whereabouts of individuals and determine their identities in public settings. AI may also be used to examine data to identify trends or patterns in the behavior of individuals. In addition, security cameras equipped with AI are used to keep an eye on the behaviors of individuals and identify them as they go about their day. Further, AI may produce weapons of mass devastation, manipulate financial markets, and surveil individuals. These adverse effects are only sufficient with the inclusion of unemployment. With the replacement of human labor with AI comes the potential for unemployment.
On a positive note, AI has proved instrumental. The most influential factor regarding this is the fact that this technology aid in complex and rather tedious activities. To reduce the purpose of the amount of manual data entry required for specific jobs, such as customer support or sales, artificial intelligence, instance, can be used. Automating routine and repetitive tasks, such as customer segmentation and analysis, is another opportunity for AI technology. Online tasks like email, marketing, and web analytics can be automated and handled by AI. In the case of job applications or any other aspect where competition exists, AI helps eradicate bias. Despite the popular misconception that AI will take away most jobs, it offers more opportunities for employment. Various machine learning algorithms can be used to detect fraud, including supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms, based on artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence systems may be programmed to evaluate available information and judge without prejudice. According to Dwivedi et al. (2021), incorporating AI into the decision-making process ensures objectivity and fair treatment of all parties involved.
An interview with Julia, a college student, on the threats and opportunities of AI, was conducted.
Interviewer: Hello, as a STEM major, what are your scholarly thoughts on AI?
Interviewee: I believe AI can be both advantageous and disadvantageous. The benefits outweigh the costs; thus, AI is an opportunity. Almost every big company is looking for AI professionals to help them make their vision a reality since they realized how Artificial Intelligence is impacting the market.
Interviewer: Why do we need Artificial Intelligence?
Interviewee: A primary goal of artificial intelligence is to build machines that are intelligent enough to mimic human behavior. Artificial intelligence is necessary for solving complex problems, automating repetitive work, saving manpower, and performing many other tasks in today’s world.
Interviewer: What are some aspects you consider threatening in regard to AI?
Interviewee: Well, I would say that the possibilities of unemployment and cybercrimes are prominent. However, it is vital to remember that AI relies on human mind. Thus, these adverse effects can be controlled. Measures only need to be taken to prevent too many advancements.
Proponents and opponents of AI both have significant arguments. Indeed, AI can be both advantageous and disadvantageous; however, with complete reliance on human minds to make these advancements, humans remain superior in the long run. Cybercrimes and unemployment can be overweighed by AI’s helping nature, especially in complex tasks. Further, automated AI systems help eradicate bias in job selection. In this regard, this technological advancement is more advantageous.
